Schalk Burger & Sons, Welbedacht Estate

Our groundbreaking cellar comprises pre-cooling, unique open cement fermenters and a basket press as we strived to built a cellar to suit our fruit. The grapes are specially selected and hand harvested with plenty of hands-on devotion during the vinification process.

We want our good fruit to come through in sound, traditional wines that can be served on the best tables in the world and complement the food, not dominate it.

The property boasts some impressively senescent vines - the intensity and multi-faceted character evident in the Pinotage and barrel fermented Chenin Blanc are testimony to the maturity of these 30-year old bush vines. "We know what gets to the cellar because we do bunch selection in the vineyards. We want our good fruit to come through in sound, traditional wines that can be served on the best tables in the world and complement the food, not dominate it," according to Schalk.

Wellington now being a traditional award winning wine area has been turned about through quite a few cellars that have taken wine making a notch up and here Welbedacht in its first two years have excelled.

The 2005 barrel fermented Chenin Blanc being selected by Neil Pendock as one of Africa's top ten wines as well as winning its class at the International Wine and Spirit competition. The 2003 Cricket Pitch winning the prestigeous 2007 Juliet Cullinan Bordeaux class against all in South Africa as well as its class at the International Wine show held in Londen. The 2005 Welbedacht Pinotage winning the heavily contested 2007 Juliet Cullinan Pinotage class. With plenty more gold medals and International category winning awards in its inventory Welbedacht has become viniculturally a leader in South Africa.

Schalk believes more is to come as the Welbedacht Hat Trick 2006 was named the Best Red Blend out of South Africa in the Decanter World Wine Awards 2009 held in London.
